The Defense Ministry is planning to equip the Ukrainian army with a Ukrainian-made missile system by the year 2013.
The press service of the Defense Ministry announced this to Ukrainian News.
“I cannot say the number of systems that will be added to the arsenal and how much they will cost. That is classified information. However, I can state the approximate date they will be added: approximately by the end of 2012 if everything goes to plan,” the press service quoted Defense Minister Anatolii Hrytsenko as saying.
The tactical range of the missiles will not exceed the range stipulated under Ukraine’s international obligations.
According to Hrytsenko, the accuracy of the missiles will be measured in millimeters, thanks to the use of modern guidance systems. The missiles will be based on universal platforms.
Hrytsenko also said that the relevant project would cost billions of hryvnia.
“As of today, almost UAH 25 million has already been transferred from the Defense Ministry’s budget as of today for implementation of this project, and the Defense Ministry will fulfill all its financial obligations before the end of this year,” Hrytsenko said.
The speed of development of the missile system will depend on the organizational and technical capabilities of its developers. Sixty Ukrainian enterprises will be involved in its development.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Viktor Yuschenko has promised that funding for domestic production of tactical missiles will start in 2008.
