The accident involving a train carrying yellow phosphorus in the Lviv region of Ukraine was caused by defects in cisterns fitted with faulty valves in Kazakhstan.
The statement was made by an expert group during a press conference on Tuesday.
“In our view, based on the results of the investigation, the accident was caused by a violation of the rules of transportation of dangerous cargo, yellow phosphorus. It was transported in cisterns manufactured by OJSC MZTM in Mariupol that did not meet technical standards and had some defects that contributed to the derailment of the train,” Serhiy Miamlin, the deputy rector of the Dnipropetrovsk National Academy, said.
He said that experts established that practically all cisterns had faulty safety admission valves. “These cisterns belong to Kazfosfat of Kazakhstan, they repaired the cisterns and modernized them. Additional tests by the producing plant proved that the valves did not function,” Myamlin said.
According to earlier reports, 15 cisterns loaded with yellow phosphorous derailed and six caught fire in the Ozhydiv-Krasne railroad section in Lviv region on July 16. The train originated from Kazakhstan.
