Pysanky Egg Art Workshop
You are cordially invited to participate in hands-on pysanky writing class on April 2, 2023 at 2 PM. Participants will learn about Pysanky (Ukrainian), Pisanki (Polish), Kraslice (Czech), one of the most interesting expressions of folk art that dates back eight thousand years. Originated in pre-Christian times, pysanky blended ancient rituals with Christian traditions. Using a hollow chicken egg, melted beeswax, and layers of dyes, you will write an intricate pysanka egg based on the symbolism of colors and design. It takes around three hours to make one pysanka egg. All supplies are provided, as well as designs of various complexity to choose from. A handout with a detailed explanation of symbols and steps of completion will be included for each participant. Artist, Iryna Dovzhanska, will guide you in every step of this captivating process. Having learned this exciting pysanky art in Ukraine, she shares her experience and secrets with those who want to try or perfect their skills. Iryna has been making pysanky for 15 years; she’s participated in the annual International Egg Show in Dallas for over ten years, and her pysanka won 1st place in the category of Folk Art. Those interested will be able to purchase Iryna’s chicken, goose, or ostrich pysanky.
