The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky

“The scariest thing is that part of the world got used to the war in Ukraine,” President Zelensky told Time Magazine Special Correspondent Simon Shuster. Global support for the war in Ukraine has dwindled as focus shifted to war in the Middle East. Russia controls 1/5th of Ukrainian territory and Zelensky fears that the world is tiring of watching the same reruns. Support for Ukraine in the U.S. has dropped from 65% to 41% in a matter of months. Shuster was granted special access to President Zelensky for an inside look at what made this leader who caught the world’s attention.

Simon Shuster has reported from Russia and Ukraine for 17 years, most of that time as a staff writer for Time Magazine. He was the first foreign journalist to arrive in Crimea in 2014 as Russian troops took over the peninsula. Shuster has covered Volodymyr Zelensky since 2019. He traveled to the war zone with President Zelensky in April 2021 as the Russian army gathered at the border. When the full-scale invasion began in 2022, Shuster spent months embedded with President Zelensky’s team, with unparalleled access to their Kyiv compound, where he wrote The Showman, his first book.
